The annual St. Louis County Fair & Air Show will be held August 31 - September 3, 2007, on the fairgrounds at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, Missouri.
A Few of this year's highlights:
The Zoppè Family Circus welcomes guests into the intimate 500-seat tent for a one-ring circus that honors the best of the Old-World Italian tradition. Starring Nino the clown, the circus is propelled by a central story (as opposed to individual acts) that feature acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, clowning and plenty of audience participation. Giovanni Zoppè, the sixth-generation circus performer who plays Nino, says the show aims higher than what passes for circuses these days. "We try to touch every emotion during the show," he says. "They'll laugh, they'll cry, and they'll feel for the characters. It's more of an event than a show."
Stop by the Boeing exhibit to “fly:” in a real flight simulator! Two interactive, interconnected simulators will offer fairgoers a highly realistic experience, one that will delight amateurs and pros alike. Kids can try to win a prize by landing paper planes on an aircraft carrier model. Afterward, tour the air-conditioned display featuring exhibit panels, models and exciting videos shown on 50-inch plasma screens. Visitors will get a close look at the Joint Direct Attack Munition, a guidance kit that converts unguided free-fall bombs into accurately guided “smart” weapons; Harpoon, an anti-ship missile, a small diameter bomb, a precision –strike weapon system; and the Standoff Land Attack Missile – Expanded Response, an all-weather, over-the-horizon precision strike missile. Be sure to visit the Boeing retail store featuring authentic, custom-designed F-15, F/A-18 and other military program merchandise, as well as the popular Boeing signature line. Take home a souvenir to mark the occasion and start your aerospace collection today.
“Take a Closer Look,” a hands-on science outreach program presented by The Magic House, invites children to participate in a potpourri of fun and educational activities.
Kids can:
- Build a magnet structure and learn about magnetic poles
- Create a pair of “fun” glasses and experiment with 3-D and color mixing
- Discover water’s “sticking” power and investigate surface tension
- Use 5 senses and smell, touch, listen and observe
- Reflect upon reflection and symmetry and explore with mirrors
Come “Take a Closer Look” on Saturday and Sunday, located near the Small County Bandwagon.
Johnsonville Sausage has taken the all-American activity of tailgating to supersize proportions. A hibachi on the back of a pickup is so…yesterday. Tailgating Johnsonville style involves a 53,000 pound, 65-foot grill on the back of a semi-truck. The world’s largest touring grill is delivering the great taste of Johnsonville bratwurst to cities across America and Canada while raising money for local charities.
The Johnsonville Big Taste Grill™ was created in 1995 to celebrate Johnsonville’s 50th anniversary. Since then it’s visited numerous cities and taken part in a variety of fairs, festivals and special events throughout the U.S. and Canada and has raised more than $2 million for charities and other non-profit organizations.
The Blue Angels’ mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps.
A Blue Angels flight demonstration exhibits choreographed refinements of skills possessed by all naval aviators. It includes the graceful aerobatic maneuvers of the four-plane Diamond Formation, in concert with the fast-paced, high-performance maneuvers of its two Solo Pilots. Finally, the team illustrates the pinnacle of precision flying, performing maneuvers locked as a unit in the renowned, six-jet Delta Formation.
The team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, during the show season. However, the squadron spends January through March training pilots and new team members at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California.
The Blue Angels are scheduled to fly 66 air shows at 35 air show sites in the United States during the 2007 season, as the team celebrates 20 years of flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Last season, more than 15 million spectators watched the Blue Angels perform. Since its inception in 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 427 million fans.
The makers of Red Baron® pizza are proud to support the longest-running non-military air show act in history. Far from its banner-towing beginning, today the Red Baron Squadron® team performs modern maneuvers in its vintage Boeing Stearman biplanes.
Did you know . . . ?
- Since 1979, the Red Baron Squadron® has flown more than 80,000 passengers, and traveled more than six million miles.
- Red Baron Pizza Squadron® pilots fly in formation less than a wingspan apart while performing aerobatic maneuvers such as loops, clover leafs, avalanches and barrel rolls.
- The Red Baron Squadron® team consists of eight professional aerobatic pilots who undergo rigorous annual training and safety programs. Each Red Baron Squadron® crew-chief has the highest rating granted by the FAA for the inspection and repair of Squadron aircraft. Team standards are comparable to those of the military.
- The Red Baron Squadron® aircraft are fully-restored historic Boeing Stearman biplanes built between 1941 and 1943.
- The Boeing Stearman was a primary training aircraft in the U.S., Canada and Europe during World War II. More pilots have trained in a Stearman than any other airplane.
Skip Stewart is an Aerobatic Champion, has won several Gold medal in regional competition, and has been awarded two Pitts Trophies! "Competition Aerobatics is a great way to learn discipline and precision. But, while a great competition pilot can make most difficult maneuver look easy, a great showman can make it look impossible. This is what the fans find entertaining!" says Skip.
The Plane
Skip's plane is not an aerobatic trainer or airplane designed for competition aerobatics. It was custom built for a single purpose - Airshows! Skip completely disassembled his Pitts S-2S and rebuilt it to specifications unique to his flying style. The fuselage has been strengthened and fitted with new wings, designed by Scheunemann Aviation Products, to handle the high G loads imposed during his routine. All the control surfaces have been enlarged to make Skip's unique maneuvers possible. The engine was replaced by a highly modified, 550 cubic inch powerhouse built by AvWorks Custom Engines and Components.
All these modifications, together with the huge, wide-chord Whirlwind 400C propeller, make for an airplane that is almost as much fun to watch as it is for Skip to fly!
